November 16th- November 22nd: Stone Soup
Dear Friends and Family,
We hope you are enjoying the books and craft shared by Outreach Productions. From now until Christmas we will share stories about theme related to giving, along with some fun crafts. For our first story we picked Stone Soup.
There are so many versions of this story with different characters, plots and settings. If you are not familiar Outreach is sharing a short version of the story. We will also post a small scene from the Puppet Theater. So read the story below and read other Stop Soup tales by various authors.
Stone Soup
Europe
A tramp knocked at the farmhouse door. "I can't let you in, for my husband is not at home," said the woman of the house. "And I haven't a thing to offer you," she added. Her voice showed unmasked scorn for the man she held to be a beggar.
"Then you could make use of my soup stone," he replied, pulling from his pocket what appeared to be an ordinary stone.
"Soup stone?" said she, suddenly showing interest in the tattered stranger.
"Oh yes," he said. "If I just had a potful of water and a fire, I'd show you how it works. This stone and boiling water make the best soup you've ever eaten. Your husband would thank you for the good supper, if you'd just let me in and put my stone to use over your fire."
The woman's suspicions yielded to her desire for an easy meal, and she opened the door. A pot of water was soon brought to a boil. The tramp dropped in his stone, then tasted the watery gruel. "It needs salt, and a bit of barley," he said. "And some butter, too, if you can spare it." The woman obliged him by adding the requested ingredients. He tasted it again. "Much better!" he said. "But a good soup needs vegetables and potatoes. Are there none in your cellar?"
"Oh yes," she said, her enthusiasm for the miracle soup growing, and she quickly found a generous portion of potatoes, turnips, carrots, and beans.
After the mixture had boiled awhile, the man tasted it again. "It's almost soup," he said. "The stone has not failed us. But some chicken broth and chunks of meat would do it well."
The woman, recognizing the truth of his claim, ran to the chicken yard, returning soon with a freshly slaughtered fowl. "Soup stone, do your thing!" she said, adding the chicken to the stew.
When their noses told them that the soup was done, the woman dished up a healthy portion for her guest and for herself. They ate their fill, and -- thanks to the magic stone -- there was still a modest bowlful left over for her husband's supper.
"My thanks for the use of your pot and your fire," said the tramp as evening approached, and he sensed that the husband soon would be arriving home. He fished his stone from the bottom of the pot, licked it clean, and put it back into his pocket.
"Do come again," said the thankful woman.
"I will indeed," said the tramp, and disappeared into the woods

August 24th- 31st: Create your own Puppet Show
This week let’s use some of our fun books and stories to present a puppet show. First get your favorite book or story. Sit down and go over your story and create a script. Then decide how your puppets will look. Go to your Beautiful Junk box and check your supplies. You can make puppets from old socks, popsicle sticks, construction paper, boxes, paper plates and cloth. If you want doll like puppets follow the instructions from the book Candice and the Beautiful Junk and create papier Mache puppets.
For a stage grab a big cardboard box and create a stage. A good example would be the AlaskaGranny. On her YouTube channel she shows you how to make a lovely cardboard box puppet stage. Go to YouTube and type in AlaskaGranny Cardboard Puppet Stage, it is the first video that comes up. There are several other examples, they all are fun and easy. After making your stage decide how you want your backdrop to look. Your backdrop is the scenery in the back of your puppet that creates the setting. For example, if your puppet show is The Little Three Pigs in the background on poster board or canvas, or a big piece of paper have a drawing of a forest or town, that is your backdrop.
Now for the props. Again, say your show is about the Three Little Pigs your puppets will be pigs, and a wolf. Your props will include their houses and items they used in the stories. You can make their houses from small cereal boxes, juice boxes, oatmeal boxes or anything you think will work. Once all the main items are created sit down with sisters, brothers, cousins or friends that are safe. They could be on your team or an audience member coming to see the show. Remember if it's only you, your parents, your stuffed animals, action figures and dolls are all invited to the puppet show. HAVE FUN!!!
We at Outreach Productions love to make puppet shows. Check out our puppet shows below!

August 3rd- 9th: "Uncle Remus" and "Bruh Rabbit and the Tar Baby Girl"
Uncle Remus: The Complete Tales as told by Julius Lester
The Uncle Remus tales, originally written down by Joel Chandler Harris, were first published over a hundred years ago, and serve as the largest collection of African-American folklore. In this four-book series, Julius Lester masterfully retains the flavor of the tales, while dropping the heavy dialect of the Harris originals and adding contemporary language and references-- ensuring that the stories will be understood and enjoyed by new generations of readers.
Bruh Rabbit and the Tar Baby Girl by Virginia Hamilton
Bruh Rabbit may indeed have met his match when he comes across a tar baby in the middle of the road. The baby's deaf, dumb and blind attitude infuriates the plucky trickster, just as Wolf planned! When Bruh Rabbit gets entangled in the tar baby's sticky embrace, has he finally been foiled by his long-time enemy? Certainly not, if Wolf falls for Bruh Rabbit's clever reverse-psychology and flings the wily rabbit into the briar patch!
