It's Summertime! 

Looking for a summer enrichment program for your school, library, non-profit, or community center? Join Outreach Productions and Author Deborah Orr as we present the "Summer Reading: Folktales & Folktails" program. We have stories, crafts, puppet shows, and much, much more! In-person and virtual programming are available. Below you will find a brief description of the items in our summer reading program. Please fill out our contact form if you would like us to contact you with more information. Our summer selections highlight folktales and "folktrails" from black and brown communities. ​The Little Cornbread by Deborah Orr (Presented virtually by Deborah Orr)

 About the story:  An easy reader for child and parent to read while sitting around waiting for some good ole cornbread, or even cookies. In the story Ma and Pa decide to make the cornbread into the shape of a cornbread girl, but once the cornbread girl is ready, she jumps from the pan saying, ‘Run, run, around the world you can't catch me I'm the cornbread girl."

 The Tails 0f Uncle Remus: Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby-Various Authors (Presented virtually by Joanie Stewart)

About the story: The Stories of Brer Rabbit shows him getting into mischief because he is a trickster. In this story Brer Rabbit comes face to face with the tar baby.
 
Crafts Include:

Mumba Tales by Deborah Orr- (Presented virtually by Deborah Orr)


About the story: This is a series of stories about Mumba Monkey, who lives in a magical rain-forest. After it rained long and hard for couple of days, strange things would happen. Some of the changes were scary, like snakes being able to walk and run, and monkeys being able to speak and read the language of man. The story for this summer is Mumba and the Spider. The Spider is after Mumba Monkey. Mumba persuades the Spider to go after the Caterpillar.

Who’s in Rabbit House? Retold by Verna Aardema (Presented virtually by Deborah Orr)

About the story: Rabbit leaves her house to go to the lake. When she returns her house is inhabited by a creature called the “Long One”. This delightful tale will be presented by Author Deborah Orr, as she finds out who is the “Long One” in Rabbit’ house.

The Puppet Theater

In the Puppet Theater we will present two of our favorite Folktales.
 
The Monkey and the Crocodile by Paul Galdone (Presented virtually by Bethany Harbaugh and Olivia Jimenez-Puppeteers)                   
 

​About the book: The monkey is trying to get the delicious mango hanging from the tree. But the Monkey learns that the Crocodile is trying to capture him for dinner. The Monkey outsmarts the Crocodile over and over until the Crocodile goes away.

Sock Puppets
 
 The Borreguita and the Coyote retold by Verna Aardema (Presented virtually by Bethany Harbaugh and Olivia Jimenez-Puppeteers)
 

About the story: A little lamb uses clever tricks to outsmart a hungry coyote.

ARTS & CRAFTS


Each story time and puppet show have a craft component. Our energetic crafts instructors, Tianna Mitchell and Odera Anyasinti explain how to make each craft in a way that is simple and easy to follow. To see some of the crafts visit our Facebook page.
